To many professionals, an accurate infertility diagnosis may seem less relevant than the biological clock of the Intended Parents. For example, why spend months on an expensive surgical exam to diagnose tubal adhesions in a 38-year-old infertile patient if IVF is still the fertility treatment?
Many aspects of infertility and its medical treatments can be emotionally overwhelming. The medical workup for infertility can be difficult, and accepting the resulting diagnosis can be incredibly painful. Infertility diagnosis often brings about a range of stressful emotional reactions, including denial, shock, anger, depression, and anxiety. In addition, making decisions about medical treatments for infertility can be stressful.
A true cause of infertility is hard to reveal nowadays despite all the modern achievements of fertility work-up, but IVF procedure often represents a reasonable treatment regardless of cause. Indeed, IVF is usually an empirical intervention in most of those who are treated. And, as we can see, the classical medical paradigm of history-taking, investigation, infertility diagnostics and treatment has declining value in the modern management of infertility.
We should emphasize that a proper work-up is still valid and important in fertility treatments – because some diagnosed causes of infertility can be treated successfully, and sometimes other diseases – such as diabetes or even pituitary tumors – can be identified, and these require their own dedicated treatment. A proper work-up will also be important for the infertile couple to know if they still have a reasonable chance of spontaneous pregnancy.

Fertility specialists usually prefer to work with both partners. So, no matter what your female fertility test suggests, most men will also be tested for fertility. During infertility diagnosis, most infertile couples will undergo several basic tests and procedures. Some of those tests can play a more important role than others, depending on your personal medical background and condition. Look at a brief explanation of a set of tests and procedures.
